Woman Hospitalized as Deer Crashes Through Windshield in Morning Accident

by

UPPER BURRELL TOWNSHIP — A routine morning commute turned scary when a deer leaped in front of a woman’s car on Seventh Street Road, leading to a collision that left the woman injured and requiring hospitalization.

The incident, which occurred around 7:00 a.m. Thursday, startled commuters and prompted a swift response from local law enforcement. According to Upper Burrell police reports, the woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, was traveling westbound when the deer unexpectedly bounded onto the roadway, crashing through the windshield of her vehicle.

Acknowledging the alarming nature of the incident, AAA (American Automobile Association) issued a reminder urging motorists to remain vigilant while navigating roads, especially during peak wildlife activity periods. “You’ve got to be going slow; you’ve got to be paying attention,” emphasized Jimmy Garrity, Director of Public Affairs for AAA East Central.

Garrity emphasized the importance of heightened awareness behind the wheel, particularly during dawn and dusk when wildlife tend to be more active. “They’re still active in those twilight times of the day and those morning times of the day,” he cautioned, stressing the need for constant attentiveness from drivers.

Highlighting preventative measures, Garrity underscored the significance of minimizing distractions while driving. “It’s up to you as a driver to be always paying attention, scanning down the road,” he emphasized, urging motorists to refrain from distractions such as cell phone usage, adjusting radios, or engaging in activities like eating or grooming.

In situations where collisions with wildlife seem imminent, AAA advises drivers to prioritize safety by carefully weighing their options.

“If your option is either hit the deer or swerve and potentially hit another car, I mean, obviously, then you’re going to be in a situation where hitting the deer is the safest thing to do,” Garrity explained to WTAE.

Moreover, AAA recommends motorists to review their insurance coverage to ensure adequate protection against unforeseen accidents, including collisions involving wildlife. Taking proactive steps to verify insurance policies can provide crucial financial safeguards in the event of such incidents.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of road travel and underscores the importance of remaining vigilant and prepared for unexpected hazards, particularly during periods of heightened wildlife activity.
