LANCASTER — In a landmark decision on Tuesday, Lancaster City Council members voted unanimously to terminate the city’s collaboration with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), marking a significant shift in policy aimed at safeguarding undocumented immigrants’ access to essential services without the looming threat of deportation.
The move is seen as a critical step towards fostering inclusivity and support for all residents of Lancaster City, irrespective of their documentation status. Councilman Jaime Arroyo emphasized the importance of extending services to all members of the community, stating, “This is an opportunity for the city to help provide services to all residents of Lancaster City regardless of documentation status. At the end of the day, we’re talking about families, people — human beings.”
However, the decision has not been without its detractors. Republican Leader Representative Bryan Cutler condemned the move, labeling it as “horrible” and expressing concerns about its potential ramifications. Cutler warned that creating a sanctuary city or county effectively shifts the national border to the local neighborhood, potentially exacerbating crime rates.
Cutler cited recent incidents in other parts of the country to support his argument, including the murder of a college student in Georgia and assaults on police officers in New York City. However, Councilwoman Janet Diaz pushed back against such assertions, urging a more nuanced understanding of the situation. Diaz suggested that individuals affected by the policy may include vulnerable women and children who lack comprehension of the legal implications of their actions.
Councilmembers clarified that while the decision signifies a break from ICE collaboration, Lancaster City remains bound by federal and state immigration laws. Moreover, individuals who commit crimes within the United States may still face deportation, highlighting the importance of upholding public safety while simultaneously protecting immigrant communities.
The decision, known as The Lancaster Trust Act, reflects the council’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for all residents, regardless of their immigration status. As Lancaster City takes this bold step towards immigration reform, it stands poised to set an example for other municipalities grappling with similar challenges across the nation.
